Hydroformed Shotgun concept, manufactured from a conical Tubular Blank      

Using a Conical Tubular Blank and Hyfo’s innovative Knowledge Based Engineering tools, a solution was developed to replace a traditional stamped and spot welded Shotgun design with a single piece hydroform.

Integration with the vehicle structure is of prime importance to achieve overall performance levels – this was achieved using stamped sockets at the rear and mechanical fixing through a welded double thickness flange at the front.Key benefits delivered from this solution, compared to a traditional stamped solution, are an overall cost reduction (materials, manufacturing and assembly) and a 18% weight saving. In addition, the use of a continuously joined structure, rather than one joint at discrete intervals by spot welds will yield improved performance making further cost and mass savings for equivalent performance possible.
